I aim to bring awareness to liminal spaces and the impacts spending time in these transitional periods can have on our mental health. Visually represented through the minutes, hours or days spent travelling and their positive and negative psychological effects. During this time of travel, service stations and gas stations are a liminal space where people coming from all different places stop at to take a rest, eat at a fast-food restaurant or shop at a supermarket of their choice. All these unique people with their own destinations to go to, their own mental and physical wellbeing's and their own stories and situations, all condensed inside of a service station on the side of a motorway.

I had taken photos of a few service stations I had came into contact with on my recent travels, I used them as a basis for my jelli-prints, taking inspiration from Laura Oldfield Ford's use of bright, bold colour applied over dull drawings to communicate moments of euphoria and nostalgia.
I had taken photos of a few service stations I had came into contact with on my recent travels, I used them as a basis for my jelli-prints, taking inspiration from Laura Oldfield Ford's use of bright, bold colour applied over dull drawings to communicate moments of euphoria and nostalgia.
A combination of multiple layers of prints on top of one another, featuring my photography of the service stations, observational illustrations, and pages from an old Easy Read Britain Road guide. Attempting to seamlessly combine the scribbly line work of my illustrations with the lines from the road maps.

I looked at artist Adam Sébire’s thermographic imagery on climate change and car emissions, his work made me start to consider the effects motorways have on the climate and the interesting heat maps emitted by passing cars. The array of colours used in the thermographic imagery sparked the idea to incorporate gradients into my project. I use multiple motion and gaussian blurs to create a sense of movement similar to when passing fast vehicles leave behind a trial of light when photographed.

Combining all elements from my experimental designs resulted in a series of 9 posters, informing readers of what Liminal spaces are and the effects these emotional and physiological states have on us, how to notice them and turn these transitional periods into valuable and transformative experience.
